Steve Brown - Guitar and Backing Vocals

Q.What is your music background?

From a musical performing family.  My father plays trumpet and has played with the likes of: -

Stevie Wonder
Peter Frampton
The Who
Georgie Fame & the Blue Flames
Jimi Hendrix
Peter Green
Zoot Money’s Big Roll Band
P. P. Arnold

My Grandfather also played Trumpet and Accordian and my Grandmother was a Stage Actress.

Learnt to read music and play a Descant Recorder when I was 6.  I played trumpet briefly around the age of 11-12, but really didn’t take to it. (I was trying to please my father really!) I bought my first electric guitar when I was 16, for £15.00.

Dreams….Always wanted to be a Drummer, but never had the required independence to be able to play at the standard I wanted to. (Namely, like Keith Moon)  Guitar was just an afterthought.  I learnt to play Bass, just so I could record and multitrack my own songs and perform all the parts on the track.

Q.Which bands have you played with?

Jetstream
Live ‘n’ lern
Who Said That?
The Ravens
Second Nature
Close To Zero
Gemini
The Touch

Q.What are your musical influences?

Michael Schenker (UFO)
Brian Robertson (Thin Lizzy)
Roger Lewis (Monopacific)

I always wanted to be in a Twin guitar Line-up doing Thin Lizzy, or Boston style Guitar Harmonies, right up until I heard “The Adventures - Feel the Raindrops.”
Suddenly, by the addition of a delay pedal, one guitar could fill a stadium without using distortion.  From that point on, I thought about playing with subtlety, rather than make your ears bleed….Listen to us doing “Ain’t No Sunshine” to understand better!

Lee foster - Bass Guitar and Backing Vocal

Q.What is your music background?
A. Played various instruments at a young age but picked up Bass and Guitar when I was 14 – inspired by listening to The Jam and The Who.  I have played in various rock bands over the years, mostly in the “power trio” format of Guitar/Bass/Drums, so my style tends to be busy.  Playing with Potluck is tempering my playing into a more traditional bass role, working with Andy to provide a backing for Steve and Kev’s guitar work.

Q.Which bands have you played with?
A.Some from years back that I can’t even remember names of, but more recently with The Unprofessionals and then The Jack Daniel’s Experience, playing mostly pretty heavy rock music.  We had to call time on JD after 3 years as one of the guys has moved away to Gloucester, but we will get together for the odd gig to rock out.  Hence I wanted to get with a new Band and I auditioned for Potluck about 8 weeks ago.

Q.What are your musical influences?
A.Bass wise, John Entwistle, Jack Bruce, Bruce Foxton, Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tim Commerford from Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave – power bassists every one.  Guitar wise, probably Stevie Ray Vaughan – the man was a genius and John Frusciante of the RHCP.

Q.What equipment do you own?

Guitars
Musicman Stingray 3 EQ Bass, Vester Clipper II Bass.

Amps
550 Watt Ampeg Bass rig and a 400W Peavey Mark VI Bass Rig.  I keep it very simple.

Q.What are your favourite internationl bands?
A. Audioslave, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, The Hundred Reasons, Rage Against The Machine…

Q.Are there any local bands that you like?
A. To be honest I don’t really know any

Q.Who would you most like to meet?
A. I don’t think there’s anyone changing the world these days, so it would probably be people who changed the course of history – Einstein, Churchill, Henry VIII.  The list would be big so I won’t go on and bore anyone.

Q.What is your favourite films?
A. I don’t watch a lot of TV or films.  Probably Apocalypse Now  - I love the smell of Napalm in the morning – it smells like….victory.  Leaving Las Vegas is great – Nicolas Cage can actually act in that film.

Q.Which songs do you most hate performing on the set?
A.I haven’t really got round to that yet – I’m enjoying my playing right now.

Q.Which are your favourite songs that Potluck perform?
A. Boys are Back in Town, Dakota, Sweet Child of Mine.  I can really let loose on those and enjoy them.  I enjoy watching the other lads let loose too - it’s a very rewarding feeling to get into that groove and live in the moment – you forget all the other issues in life and just love playing music.  Best feeling in the world.

Q.What is your most memorable night on stage?
A. With my old band, playing a big open air gig with 20K PA and watching over 1000 people going crazy and crowd surfing and stuff.

Q.what is your favourite gigging venue?
A. I’ve only played 4 gigs so far and enjoyed them all – I am really looking forward to the Bierkeller in Bracknell on 5th May as it is a place where I have seen some other bands play and want to see what we can do to the place.
